Sports scene

Take it to the Hoops camp

Join Bob Ackley and Mike Orchard for a fun basketball camps for boys in grades 4-8 to learn the fundamentals of the game of basketball, including passing, dribbling and shooting. Participants will take part in drills, individual and team competition to prepare for playing on your next team. Camp I is on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the El Dorado High gyms. Boys in grades 4-6 meet from 9 a.m.-noon; boys in grades 7-8 meet from 1-4 p.m. Camp II will be held Jan. 5, 2013. The fee for each camp is $30. Placerville Tai Chi

Known as mediation in motion, Tai Chi promotes a peaceful mind though slow, gentle movements. Regular practice reduces stress, improves balance and coordination and improves overall health. Master Bruce Bolden has practiced Tai Chi since 1981. Wednesday classes sponsored by Placerville Recreation for ages 15 and up are taught upstairs at Town Hall. The next classes are Oct. 3-24. Beginners meet from 6-7 p.m.; intermediates meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The fees are $50 for intermediate classes, $40 for beginners.

Adult coed soccer

This coed 7 vs. 7 league plays on Wednesday nights at the El Dorado Hills Promontory Community Park’s synthetic field. The next league season will run Nov. 7-Jan. 9, 2013. The fee is $652 per team which includes playoffs for the top four teams. If enough teams register, two divisions will be created, otherwise a single league will be formed. Call the El Dorado Hills CSD registration desk before the Oct. 26 deadline to register a team.

Self defense

This class sponsored by Placerville Recreation for ages 18 and up is great for anyone who wants to work on hand/foot and eye coordination. Students work on strikes, kicks, blocks, focus and self-discipline. Fee of $119 includes a free uniform. The next classes at Foothill Taekwondo in Placerville, 1319 Broadway, will run on Mondays and Wednesdays, Oct. 22-Dec. 19, from 7-7:45 p.m. Classes at Cameron Park Taekwondo, 3181 Cameron Park Drive, No. 103, will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, Oct. 22-Dec. 19, from 7:30-8:15 p.m. The instructors are Bob and Connie Westphal.

Step aerobics

This aerobic workout sponsored by Placerville Recreation and taught by Jeannie Jorgensen uses bench steps, interval training, body toning and relaxing stretches. The class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9-10 a.m., upstairs at Town Hall in Placerville. The next session is Oct. 1-29. Beginners to intermediates are welcome. Bring water, towel and 1- to 5-pound weights. Pre-registration is required. The fee is $39.

Mighty Mites T-ball

Placerville Recreation is sponsoring a fun and fundamental approach to recreational sports. The next T-ball camp will be held on Wednesdays, Oct. 3-24, 5:30-6:15 p.m. at Lions Park upper field. Camps are designed for beginning players to introduce skills and develop sportsmanship and positive attitudes. Every player will have a chance to hit his or her first home run in games the last two weeks of camp. The fee is $39 with an optional T-shirt fee of $7.

Zumba Gold, gentle style 

This class for ages 16 and up is designed for those who have wanted to try Zumba but were unsure you they could do it. Instructors Kay Lenhart, Valerie Baker and Gretchen Veerkamp will break down steps to make it easier to follow. Classes sponsored by Placerville Recreation are held at Jammin Dance & Fitness, 6090 Enterprise Drive, Suite A, in Placerville. The next session is Thursdays, Oct. 4-25, from 5-6 p.m. Wear comfortable workout clothes and athletic shoes and bring a small towel and water. The fee is $45.

Pee Wee soccer

This popular four-week camp teaches the fundamentals of soccer including the correct methods to kick, trap, pass, shoot and how to be a goalie. Camp runs on Thursday afternoons, Oct. 4-25, at the Promontory Community Park softball field in El Dorado Hills. Three year olds begin at 4 p.m. with parent participation required, while ages 4-6 can choose from 5 and 6 p.m. start times. Camp fee is $57 and includes a camp T-shirt, snacks and a gift card from a sponsoring local vendor. Call the CSD Registration desk before the Sept. 28 deadline.

Placerville Kinderkicks

Youth ages 4-6 are invited to join this 30-minute martial arts class sponsored by Placerville Recreation to work on exercises, balance, coordination, attention, self-control and taekwondo blocks and kicks. There are two locations: Foothill Taekwondo, 1319 Broadway, Placerville, Monday and Wednesday, 5:30-6 p.m., from Oct. 22-Dec. 19; and Cameron Park Taekwondo, 3181 Cameron Park Drive, Ste. 103, Monday and Wednesday, Oct. 22-Dec. 19, from 5:30- 6 p.m. Instructors are Bob and Connie Westphal, Lisa Jones and Laurie Fox. The fee of $99 includes a free uniform.

Youth basketball league

Join this fun, eight-week recreational league sponsored by the El Dorado Hills CSD and learn the fundamentals while building or expanding on existing basketball skills. Youth in grades 3 and above play on a full court; kids in lower grades play on smaller courts with lowered hoops.  Games are played at the CSD Gym and other local gyms, Jan. 5-Feb. 23, 2013, with practices beginning in December. The $132 registration fee includes a uniform and personalized award for each child. Grades may be combined to form teams. This league fills up fast; the deadline to register is Oct. 19. Call the CSD desk or go online for more information.

Tennis team camp

Students on high school tennis teams or who are interested in participating will find this camp sponsored by Placerville Recreation a place to learn, grow and have fun in the process. Join El Dorado High tennis coach, Jill Mitchell, to advance your game with conditioning, attention to stroke mechanics, serves, strategy, practice drills and shot selection. Games and competitions will also be included. Sign up for one week or all three. Camp will be held at El Dorado’s newly resurfaced tennis courts on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 23-25; Oct. 30-Nov. 1; and Nov. 6-8, from 3:45-5 p.m. The fee is $25 per week or $68 for all three sessions.
