In the fall of 2001, Norm Stoldt of Somerset came to the Mountain Democrat with a journal he had written about his adventures section-hiking part of the Appalachian Trail.
At one time an avid runner who still enjoys race-walking, physical problems had forced Stoldt to find other challenges and after several pitfalls he finally embarked on his first hiking adventure. His story was interesting, something different for the sports section which normally concentrates on high school sports. Why not celebrate the accomplishment of an older athlete?
Stoldt's Appalachian Trail trek was published in the Thanksgiving issue of 2001 and thus began a series of Stormin' Norman (his trail name) hikes as he tackled the Tahoe Rim Trail, returned to finish the Appalachian Trail, and eventually set his sights on completing the Pacific Crest and Continental Divide trails, the Triple Crown of hiking.
Not every adventure was successful. Stoldt was even air-lifted off a mountain on one occasion when the trail took its toll on his body. Still he continued to hike and share his stories with the Democrat every year.
He has overcome numerous challenges, met wonderful people, including trail angels and fellow hikers, and enjoyed more than a few great triumphs.
For several months the Democrat staff has compiled all of Stormin's articles and combed through his many albums and CDs of photos to add to the series. We hope our readers will enjoy Stormin's adventures and perhaps be inspired to join him on the trail.
