Both teams entered the contest with commanding records of 2-0, buit the Taz dominated with a final score of 503-286.
Though not the tight battle anticipated, the El Dorado Hills Community Services District swimming pool arena was alive with enthusiastic athletes and admirers.
Nina Culliver, head coach to the Penguins, said,“We have quite a few older swimmers missing today’s meet for a water polo tournament. But still, we worked hard all week on turns and starts. We love swimming against the Taz. It’s such a great rivalry, and I still remember swimming Taz myself as a youth. Now in my second year as head coach, I still get just as excited to be here, and I have no idea how it’s going to go today.”
Taz started strong with clean sweeps in Events 1, 2, and 3 of the 100 yard individual medley, and continued to sweep 11 additional events throughout the day. In addition, nearly 450 improved times within the 83 events were achieved by Taz swimmers.
Top point scores earned by the following Taz athletes: Katie Tadayeski, 10 points, girls 6 and under; Calahan McColley, 8 points, boys 6 and under; Alena Tadayeski, 13 points, 7-8 girls; Bryce Williams, 10 points, 7-8 boys; Alexis MacKIe, 15 points, 9-10 girls; Patrick Sammon, 15 points, 9-10 boys; Catherine Wismar, 15 points, 11-12 girls; Curtis Seabourne and JT Ross, 13 points each, 11-12 boys; Payton Valencia, 11 points, 13-14 girls; Everett Forbes and Nicholas Grinnell, 13 points each, 13-14 boys; Morgan Jones, 15 points, 15-18 girls; and Will Kirk, 11 points, 15-18 boys.
“We are really stepping up by sweeping the first 3 events this morning,” said Taz head coach Marc Brown early on. “This is a healthy rivalry that we share with Park Terrace. It’s so fun for the league to have this kind of competition. But to be honest, we are really kicking butt today.”
Tomorrow — Saturday — the Tasmanian Devils host the Broadstone Barracudas at the EDH CSD pool. The Barracudas fell to the Granite Bay Gators last weekend, and are 2-1 for the season.
