SACRAMENTO — Running flat lands is considered the norm for the Oak Ridge High boys cross-country team.
“They are familiar with this course,” said Trojans head coach Rob Fairley, whose squad competed in the Sac Jamboree at Granite Regional Park last month.
On Wednesday, Oak Ridge returned to compete in the first Delta River League Meet, winning with 51 points over Jesuit that had 56. Ponderosa was sixth with 169 points.
“We knew that the boys competition would be very tight,” Fairley said. “We have a very competitive league.”
Dusty Armstrong took fifth place in the 3.1 miles course with a time of 16 minutes, 18 seconds. Jake Zeltner was sixth for the Trojans with a time of 16:24.
The Bruins’ top runner was David Duncan, a junior who placed 24th at 17:31.
For the girls, Oak Ridge left the course with a second place finish with 76 points — edging Ponderosa by a point. St. Francis took first with 20 points. Junior Rachel Peterson earned top honors for the Lady Trojans with a time of 19:07.
“I was very proud of their efforts today,” Fairley said. “We knew that St. Francis was going to be tough; we knew we were competing against one of the best teams in the state.”
Christine Redor was seventh for the Lady Bruins at 18:48. Brooke Ruppenthal, Hannah O’Donnell and Brittany Anselmo finished 17-19 with times of 19:50, 19:58 and 20:00, respectively.
“They raced well,” said Ponderosa head coach Karen Norwood, who celebrated her 35th birthday on Wednesday that included cupcake treats and her team singing her ‘Happy Birthday.’ “We have some great seniors; they did a great job leading the group. I’m really looking forward to what these girls can do the rest of the season.”
The first league meet several weeks ago was postponed because of hot temperatures. Wednesday, temperatures were in the upper 80s.
The Oak Ridge frosh-soph boys also earned first place with 25 points, and had five runners place in the top 11.
