Trojan tennis co-shares banner; D’backs also in playoffs

By May 1, 2011

Sac-Joaquin Section playoff team tennis gets underway this week with two local teams in contention. In Division III coed play, Union Mine takes to the home court today in an outbracket match against Sacramento Country Day while Oak Ridge’s boys tennis hosts Napa tomorrow in a D-I matchup at the Broadstone Racket Club.

The Trojans’ first year in the Delta River League was a success as they tied with Jesuit for the league championship, each taking a match from the other at home to finish 9-1. Score-wise, the Marauders won more sets head-to-head to snare the league’s No. 1 seed.

The Diamondbacks finished 8-4 and in third place in the Sierra Valley Conference. River City and Vista del Lago finished ahead of Union Mine but the D’backs were competitive against both. Union Mine fell twice by 4-5 scores to the Eagles. El Dorado was 5-7 and didn’t qualify for the postseason.

In individual play, Oak Ridge and Ponderosa were at the Millennium SportsClub in Shingle Springs last week for the Delta River League Tournament. In Super Singles, Jesuit’s Suresh Ewaran defeated Troy’s Tanner Schmutte 4-6, 6-2, 2-6 in the finals while Oak Ridge’s Jimmy Giovannini came-from-behind to down Bruin Kevin Valentine for third place. Schmutte, Giovannini and Ewaran advance to this week’s Individual Section Tournament at the Laguna Creek Racquet Club.

Trojans also competed for the No.3-6 singles titles, winning once. At No. 3, Andrew Hall defeated a Folsom opponent in straight sets while Alex Charn (No.4), Nic Atkinson (5) and Jacob Zetlin (6) were each runner-up.

In Super Doubles, Hall and Atkinson teamed to take third place after their 6-3, 6-1 win over Folsom’s Tanner Scurfield-Glen Zhou. The Oak Ridge duo, along with two sets of Jesuit parings, advance to the individual sections.

Trojan doubles teams were there at the end vying for Nos. 1-3 championships. At No. 1, Tom Barton and Charlie Conaro took the title with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Jesuit but Matt Fergerson-Matthew Lai (2) and Scotty Lee-Jonathan Kim both had to settle for second place.

League tournament results for the Sierra Valley Conference will be posted during the week.
