GARDEN VALLEY — Four turnovers within the span of a minute of the second quarter was costly for the Golden Sierra High girls basketball team which fell to Cordova, 58-34, in a non-league game Thursday at Rod Hedlund Gym.
After rallying from a 9-1 deficit to 9-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Grizzlies’ (2-11) miscues came as the Lancers’ pressured and harassed the backcourt. That helped Cordova to a 21-0 run for a 30-8 lead before Griz Kenna Barth hit a basket with 1:48 left in the second quarter. Cordova led 30-12 at halftime.
In the second half, the Grizzlies forced the Lancers into nine turnovers. Golden Sierra outscored Cordova by an 18-15 margin in the fourth quarter.
“They came out and played with a little more intensity,” Golden Sierra head coach Ronald Ebitson said. “We were trying to win both quarters in the second half.”
Barth was the Grizzlies’ leading scorer with 13 points. Forward Lindsay Dorosh followed with six. Guard Kylie Bone and forwards Becca Brown and Sierra Monroe had three points each. Forwards Jenna Pendzinski and Kaylay Murchie joined guard Melissa Comstock in scoring two points each.
