Ponderosa High golfer Corey Pereira finished tied for 16th place at the Callaway Junior World Golf Tournament at Torrey Pine, South, in San Diego in what’s considered the biggest junior event nationally and internationally. The four-day event was cut to 55 players after three days. Pereira, a Bruin senior-to-be, had a stellar junior season for Ponderosa, capped by a sixth place finish at the CIF State Tournament at San Gabriel Country Club to become the first-ever El Dorado County prep golfer to medal at the state level.
Pereira qualified for the state tournament with a fifth-place finish at the Northern California Tournament at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico. The Delta River League All League performer also won the Future’s Collegian World Tour 16-19 Tournament at the Palm Beach Gardens in Florida.

El Dorado High graduate Joe Soik, a standout runner for the Cougar Track and Field and Cross Country teams, will compete in both for Western Oregon University. As a senior, Soik finished 18th at the Cross Country Meet and was first team Sierra Valley Conference All League. Last spring for the Cougar track and field team, Soik was a league and Divisional champ for the 3,200 meter race and third in Divisionals for the 1,600. He qualified for the Masters Meet and was All League.

Three swimmers from El Dorado County were U.S. Olympic Trial qualifiers: Lauren Clifford (El Dorado, Northwestern), Mikaela Macklin (El Dorado, San Diego State) and Sara Haley (Oak Ridge, Louisiana State University). Clifford qualified for the second time.
