The Union Mine girls volleyball team fell to top seed Escalon 3-1 last Thursday to finish their season 14-12.

El Dorado grad Mikaela Macklin, a junior at the San Diego State University, won her first Mountain West Conference Athlete of the Week award for an overall pentathlon title against the University of San Diego and victories in three events: 200 fly,(2:07.07); 200 breast, (2:21.86); and 200 IM, (2:05.04).

Bruin vs. Bruin. Former Ponderosa basketball alums Brad Waldow (St. Mary’s) and Steve Lackey (Sonoma  State), teammates for two seasons at Ponderosa, met up Saturday in Moraga for the Gaels’ home opener. Waldow scored 11 points in his team’s win while Lackey had seven. Both played 25 minutes.

Former Ponderosa pitcher Tyler Graham was named the new varsity baseball coach for the Shindle Springs’ program, replacing Dave White. Graham is remembered for a marathon playoff game he pitched against Bella Vista in 2006. He went onto play for Sierra and the University of Reno before getting drafted by the Kansa City Royals organization.
