EL DORADO — New Union Mine High swim coach Darin Mai had 43 swimmers compete in their first Sierra Valley Conference meet against River City Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks split with the Raiders; the Lady D’backs knocked off the Lady Raiders, 93-66, while the boys fell, 90-74.

For the girls, Kaitlin Watkins was first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:48.78 seconds. She was also part of the 200 medley relay team, joining Caffrey Lynch, Brioana Schafer and Savannah Day in taking first place at 2:06.90.

“Big team leader,” said Mai of Watkins.

Other Lady D’backs who took first place was Day, 200 IM, 2:37.03; Lynch, 100 backstroke, 1:09.53; 400 free relay (Day, Lynch, Schafer, Watkins), 4:27.72.

For the boys, Jason Williams took first place in the 200 freestyle at 1:51.16, and the 100 fly at 54.75. Devlen Whisler was first in the 500 freestyle at 5:12.66, and the 200 IM at 2:10.22. Whisler joined Williams, Wyatt Hasemeier and Marcos Wardo as part of the 400 relay team taking first place.

Other D’backs who took first place were Hasemeier, 100 free, 55.06; and Hank Hasemeier, 50 freestyle, 23.78.

“What we’re looking for is the kids trying different events,” Mai said. “Over the course of the season, we’ll horn in what is their best (events).”

Mai feels both teams should be right in the hunt in being one of the top teams in the conference.

“I think we’re right in the hunt with everybody,” Mai said.
