LAS VEGAS — Former Ponderosa Bruin Brad Waldow scored 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting Monday, helping St. Mary’s outlast Gonzaga 78-74 in overtime to win the West Coast Conference basketball tournament at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

The victory gives the Gaels an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, also known as March Madness, that begins later this month. St. Mary’s last visit in 2009-10 resulted in the team reaching the Sweet 16.

Waldow, a starting redshirt freshman, logged 34 minutes and pulled down eight rebounds with one block against the ‘Zags, the Gaels’ biggest nemesis in the WCC over the years.

Waldow is a 2010 Ponderosa graduate where he performed at an All League level for the Bruins.
