Week filled with tournaments

December 6, 2010 |

‘Tis the season for tournaments as basketball and wrestling teams gear up for the beginning of the league schedules in 2011.

In El Dorado County this week the Oak Ridge girls basketball team hosts the Trojan Shoot Out, the Golden Sierra girls host the Darrell Tillotson Memorial Tournament, and the Ponderosa wrestling team is holding the annual Ponderosa Duals.

Other teams are on the road, including the Bruin boys at the Central Valley Tournament; the Lady Bruins at the River City Tournament; and the Oak Ridge wrestling team travels to Ohio for the Walsh Ironman Invitational.

The Shoot Out starts Thursday with the El Dorado girls opening against Turlock at 3 p.m. Rocklin meets Pleasant Grove at 5, followed by Oak Ridge vs Nevada Union at 6:30. In the final game of the day Yosemite plays Burbank at 8 p.m.

Games times are the same on Friday, with winners’ bracket games at 3:30 and 6:30, and losers’ bracket games at 5 and 8 p.m. The Mountain Democrat sports schedule will be updated online each day.

The tournament concludes Saturday with the first game at 11:30 a.m. and the championship at 4 p.m.

Golden Sierra takes the court Friday against Delta at 7:30 p.m. The tournament includes Delta, Victory Christian and Lutheran in a round-robin format. The Grizzlies play Victory Christian at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and meet Lutheran at 7:30 that evening.

The lineup for the annual Ponderosa Duals this year is divided into pools. Pool A. includes Ponderosa Green, Del Campo, El Dorado and Granite Bay. Pool B includes Woodcreek, Ponderosa Grey, Vista del Lago and Will C. Wood. Battling in Pool C will be Roseville, Mesa Verde, Damonte Ranch from Reno, and Merced.

Once seeding is determined at the end of the first three rounds of pool play, the teams are bracketed and resume wrestling at 1:30 in Round 4. The final round begins at 4:30.
