Inaugural winner nets $4,000
A capacity crowd packed the grandstands of Placerville Speedway Wednesday night for the annual July Fourth Spectacular and the Inaugural Tiner Family Classic featuring the sprint cars of the Hoosier Tires Civil War Series in the highest paying Independence Day event in the 47-year history of the local speedway.
When the final checkered flag waved, Colby Wiesz of Colfax took home a $4,000 payday and the prestige of winning before the large July Fourth crowd.
“It’s always special to come here and race on the Fourth of July with this big crowd,” Wiesz said. “I really have to thank the Tiner family for putting this race together and hopefully it’s something that will continue every year. The track was tricky tonight but it was a good track to race on in the end. I got lucky whenever we came up on lapped traffic we got a caution and a clean restart because I know they were closing in on me.”
A total of 44 cars formed the roster for Wednesday’s race. Wiesz had the benefit of starting on the pole position for the 30-lap feature event. Once the green flag flew, the three-time Marysville track champion led every lap of the event, exercising both caution and aggression on the track surface that became extremely dry and slick due to the early holiday start time.
After pulling a lead of several car lengths on the field, Wiesz felt the pressure of seventh-place starter Kyle Hirst of Elk Grove in the latter laps. As the leader reached lapped traffic near the half way point, his advantage began to diminish just as a caution flag flew to clear his route for the restart. This pattern continued throughout the 30-lap affair, permitting Wiesz to maintain his lead all the way to the checkered flag.
At the finish line, Wiesz was followed by Hirst while Stephen Allard of Cameron Park finished in the third position after charging his way up from the 12th place starting position. Jonathan Allard of Chico drove from 10th to fourth place while Greg DeCaires of Elk Grove rounded out the top five.
Sean Becker of Roseville won the B feature Wednesday over Jonathan Allard. Justin Sanders of Palmdale was third followed by Justin Johnson of Shingle Springs. Earlier in the evening, Johnson earned the fast time award and a $500 bonus for his effort in the Tiner Classic.
The C Main was captured by Koen Shaw over Matt Sargent. Heat races were claimed by Cody Lamar, Shane Golobic, Andy Gregg and Jimmy Trulli.
The Civil War Sprint Car Series’s next stop is Petaluma. Placerville Speedway returns to action July 14 with the big Mark Forni Classic. For further details visit placervillespeedway.com.
