The Ponderosa and Oak Ridge varsity wrestling teams finished near the top of their respective tournaments last weekend; the Bruins topping a 12-team field at their own Gold Country Classic and the Trojans taking second in Oakley at the Freedom Duals.
The Bruins narrowly out-pointed Elk Grove for the team title 122-120. El Dorado brought six wrestlers and finished 10th.
Ponderosa had three champions. At 145 pounds. Christian Canepa, went undefeated as did Trae Providence (170) and Nick Troquato (182).
Five Bruins placed second: T.J. Holloway (106), Jacob Gonzalez (120), Jonathan Timm (138), Joshua Ferry (160) and Joe Delvalle (195). In third was David Timm (145), Nat Israel (170) and Henry Sharoyan (285) while Keegan Bell (126), Elan Tubbs (138) and Austin Tibbs (152) were fourth.
Placing for the Cougars in fourth was Matt Johnson (132) and Tyler Land (170).
Oak Ridge defeated Napa, Albany and California High in the first three rounds of the dual team format before downing Foothill 48-26 in the semifinals. The Trojans lost to James Logan 35-26 in the finals.
Keaton Subjeck (182), Ali Atebar (170), Brandon Claiborne (145) and Josh Ploke (106) each went 5-0 for first place. Sherman McVay (195), Ryan Redhair (132), Ryan Johnson (138) and Kevan Cryan (152) were all 4-1 for second.
A week ago at the Vista Invitational, Oak Ridge’s Jake Plaskon and James Lee each took sixth place.
Golden Sierra also competed in Folsom. Six Grizzlies: Patrick Lewis (120), Kurt Dollar (126), Austin Mason (138), Dillion Brockman (152), Brian Agee (170) and Jacob Hamilton (195) made the trip with Lewis placing third and Agee fifth.
At Stockton’s McNair High, Grizzly Sydney Parker medaled in second place and Holly Mason was fifth.
At the Amador Invitational, Oak Ridge’s JV fared well as Patrick Irwin, Kevin Belcher and Jacob Beck placed first and Eric Tikhanov, Rocco Ysmael and Curtis Meissner came in second.
