GRANITE BAY — Second-year Trojan mountain bike racer Maren Cosens beat the current XTerra national champion during Saturday's first race series of the all-new Sierra Nevada High School Racing League.

Cosens was one of three competitors from the Trojans High School Mountain Bike Team to place first in the race, and the only Trojan Category 1 racer to do so. Cosens beat Roseville's Shayna Powless by 16 seconds to finish at 22:34 in the short track race.

Nearly two weeks of dry weather produced a lighting-fast 1.5 mile course through wooded areas, granite out-croppings and a quarter mile run along the beach of Folsom Lake. Sixty-five degree weather greeted 139 high school and middle school mountain bike racers for the inaugural run.

Cosens surprised the large crowd with a strong spring to capture the girls Category 1 race. Through four laps, Cosens and Powless swapped the top spot over and over until the final stretch of beach. A powerful spring through deep sand allowed Cosens to gain a bike length advantage and keep it to the finish.

Other first-place finishers included Amber Pacheco and Sara Schneider in Cat. 2 and 3, respectively.

In the Novice 14-and-under class, James Goodwin, Austin Streetman and Casey Nyquist took first-through third places.

Carson Mote and Travis Spruitenburg took first and second in the Frosh Cat. 3. Sophomore Will Harper took second in Cat. 2, and Parker Eide took second in Cat. 2 Varsity.

The Trojans High School mountain bike team consists of approximately 40 riders under the guidance of coach Mark Ferry. Now in its second year, the team has added a middle school component, bringing to toll to more than 100 riders. To learn more about the team visit trojanmtbracing.com.
