Feb. 12, 1939 – April 30, 2013

Bob Morgan went home to be with his Lord and Savior on April 30, 2013, following a valiant battle with cancer. He was born on Feb. 12, 1939, in Jenny Lind, Ark., to Olen James and Irene Knox Morgan. He enjoyed his early years in rural Arkansas and later moved to Santa Paula, Calif., where he graduated from Santa Paula High School.

Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1957 and was stationed in Baumgarten, Germany. After his military service he first served in the Santa Paula Police Department and then moved to Denver where he joined Denver Police Department and developed interests in hunting, fishing, taxidermy, country music, dancing and restoring vintage cars. He retired from the Denver Police Department in 1985 after 25 years of service and managing their crime lab. Seeking a warmer climate he donned a captain’s hat for a charter fishing business for five years in Punta Gorda, Fla. He returned to police service once again in 1990, where he also headed the Oxnard Police Department’s crime lab.

After 50 years of service to his country and community, Bob and his wife Sandra retired and moved from their home in Ojai in 2007 and settled in Pollock Pines. There he enjoyed family gatherings, wonderful friendships, boating, restoring vintage Ford vehicles and attending the Pollock Pines Community Church. He was a member of the Early Ford V-8 Club of America, El Dorado Early Ford V-8 Club and Thunderbird Car Club of America and a regular attendee at local car shows.

Bob was preceded in death by Thomas and Pearl Morgan, his beloved grandparents; and is survived by his wife, Sandra; and his brother, Gary (Pam) Morgan of Tacoma, Wash. His four children and their families reside in the greater metropolitan area of Denver. He was proud of his children, including two sons, Robert (Trisha) Morgan and Stephen (Tobi) Morgan; and two daughters, Debbie Morgan and Michelle Sewell. His seven grandchildren are David (Janie) Kenney, Sara (Richardo) Perez, Cody Sewell, Emily Sewell, Nicole Morgan, Shane Morgan and Christine Morgan. His four great-grandchildren are Colby Kenney, Owen Kenney, Bella Perez and Matthew Sewell.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at the Pollock Pines Community Church on Monday, May 20 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Bob’s name to your favorite charity. The Morgan Family extends a heartfelt thank you to the devoted staff at the Transitional Care Center at Marshall Hospital for their loving care of Bob during his illness.

June 11, 1926 — April 26, 2013

Mary Katherine Potter, 86, passed away peacefully into heaven on April 26, 2013, at Gold Country Health Center among her family members. She was born on June 11, 1926, and raised in Pecos, Texas. Her parents were Max Otto and Rosalia Kelly Otto.

During high school Mary, who had a lifelong love of ice cream, was employed as a “soda jerk” in a drug store. After high school she obtained a job clerking at the Army Air Force base in Pecos, where she met and married B.W. Potter. They moved and lived briefly in Texas, Tempe, Ariz., and Brawley, Calif., and then finally settled in San Diego, Calif.

Mary spent her married years as a devoted housewife and a loving mother. She also had a passion for outdoor gardening. In her 50s she became a CNA, working for Beverly Manor for many years. Eventually, she and B.W. moved to the Placerville area in 1989 to be with her family. She loved working as a cafeteria aide at Gold Oak School District, until she became an amputee. Even with her disability she volunteered for many years at Charles Brown Elementary School, helping her daughter, who was a teacher there.

Mary was a devout Catholic attending St. Patrick Church. Anyone who knew her would always comment how polite, thankful, loving, sweet, generous and energetic she was. Her family nicknamed her the Yellow Rose of Texas. She was an affectionate wife, kind-hearted mother, doting grandmother and a generous great-grandmother. Her husband, B.W., daughter, Shery Robbins, brothers Bob Otto, Jimmy Otto, preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Eddinger; son-in-law, Tom Eddinger; three grandchildren, Rob W. Brice (wife Mary Brice), Christie Boyer (husband Joel Boyer) and Jay Eddinger; three great-grandchildren, Robert P. Brice, Alex Brice and Brigitte Boyer; a brother, Elmer Otto of Chicago, Ill.; and a sister, Joyce Ashmore, of Houston, Texas.

A mass will be said in Mary’s honor. Her family is indebted to the outstanding staff of Gold Country Health Center, who treated her with great respect and dignity, as if she were their family member, too. The family will hold a private memorial and graveside service.

Oct. 11, 1914 — April 19, 2013

Our mother Helen Louise Petersen passed from this life on April 19, 2013, after 98 years as a Placervillian. She was second-generation El Dorado County resident, born on Oct. 11, 1914, in Placerville, Calif., to Margaret Elizabeth Callan and Thomas Christian Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Enevold “Bing” Petersen; her son, Patrick Petersen; grandson, Michael Petetsen Jr.; great-grandson, baby David Fenrich; and her brother, Thomas Callan Smith. She is survived by her sons, Michael Petersen (wife Sharon) of Placerville and Thomas Petersen of Weaverville, N.C.; and daughter, Kathleen Trumbly (husband Wayne) of Placerville. She leaves behind nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several neices and nephews.

Helen attended local schools and was among the first graduating class from El Dorado High School on Canal Street in 1932. She attended Sacramento City College after graduation but returned home as the depression deepened. She worked downtown in local businesses. Her best friend’s family owned the Empire Theater and she and her brother Tom Smith both worked there. She sold tickets and Tom was projectionist. This is where she met the love of her life, Bing Petersen. They married in 1937. She was a homemaker for several years, taking care of her family.

In the mid 1950s Helen and Bing became the co-owners of the Placerville Drive Inn Market with her brother and his wife, Gloria. They sold the store in 1967 as Bing’s health was declining. He passed away in 1972. Helen retired from working in 1974 to take care of her 90-year-old mother and start another career in child care. She took wonderful care of her daughter’s children and several other children over the years. She was driving kids here and there, especially for ice cream at Thrifty, clear up into her 80s.

Helen will be truly missed by her family and all the people who loved her, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Tom, her son, arranged for her to have a receiver in her room at Eskaton Lodge and later at Gold Country, where she received photos of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their activities on a daily basis.

The family would like to thank Gold Country Skilled Nursing and the entire staff for the wonderful care through the last year of her life. We would also like to thank the wonderful people at Eskaton Lodge. We would also like to especially thank Snowline Hospice for their wonderful care and support of our mom. A funeral mass will be held at St. Patrick Church on Monday, May 13, at 10 a.m.

Sept. 26, 1927 — April 16, 2013

LaVonne A. Ward (Brennan) passed peacefully of natural causes in Placerville, Calif., on April 16, 2013. She was born in Indianapolis, Ind., on Sept. 26, 1927. She was a resident of El Dorado County since 1988.

LaVonne was preceded in death by her mother, Clela; and her father, Raymond Brennan; her brother, James Brennan; and son-in-law, Robert Lee. She was the beloved mother of Becki, Nancy (Jerry) and Jay (Laura). She was blessed with six grandchildren. They will miss her greatly; the crafts, the Christmas candy, and later on, the texts and Words with Friends games.

LaVonne lived her early life in Indianapolis before marrying and coming west to California. She lived in Upland, Ridgecrest and Costa Mesa, Calif., before moving to Northern California to be closer to her children. After retiring from Blue Shield in 1992 she became a full time grandmother, “Gram.” This job she did best, even as she had been a respected and capable secretary, book keeper and customer service representative for so many years. She enjoyed the Cameron Park Newcomers group, playing Rummikub with her friends, endless quilting, crocheting and crafting and traveling to Hawaii.

A private celebration of life for LaVonne is being planned for mid-May. Remembrances can be made to Snowline Hospice, as she was a longtime thrift shop volunteer in Cameron Park.

Dec. 16, 1922 — April 28, 2013

On April 28, 2013, Annette Kruth left this world for her eternal home in Heaven. Although she will be missed by friends and family here she is now at home with the Lord. She was born on Dec. 16, 1922, in the small rice farming community of Richvale, Calif. Her father was A.J. Lofgren, the local chiropractor and doctor. As the youngest of five children, with four brothers, she grew up loving outdoor activity, including swimming, fishing and hiking. Their home was a center of activity in the small town, where everyone knew everyone else.

Annette graduated from high school in Biggs, Calif., and attended college in Chico and Sacramento, where she studied business. She met Alfred Kruth, a young University of California engineering student, and married him in 1943. Al served in the military during World War II and after the war completed his engineering studies. He held several engineering jobs and was the City Engineer in Ukiah, Calif., for 27 years until his retirement.

Al and Annette had five children. They were blessed with 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. They enjoyed hosting more than 13 exchange students from countries including Turkey, Sweden, Belgium, Australia and Brazil. After Al’s retirement, they were able to travel extensively and visit the home countries of each of the students.

Service to others was a trademark of Annette’s life. Through her church, she was a driving force for collection of medical supplies to be sent to Africa. She was a coordinator for the Placerville Parkinson’s Association group for many years and provided transport and assistance to many members. Her smiling demeanor will be sorely missed.

Family was always a big part of Annette’s life and she is survived by her children, Maurice and Lois Kruth of El Dorado Hills, Calif., Raymond and Ildiko Kruth of Reno, Nev., Warren and Julie Kruth of Felton, Calif., Norma and Paul Eggli of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Andrea and Aaron MacMillan of Antelope, Calif.; and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A service celebrating Annette’s life will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, May 4, at Discovery Hills Evangelical Free Church, 4270 Shingle Springs Road in Shingle Springs, Calif. She requested that contributions in her memory be made to Campus Crusade for the ministries of her grandchildren, Thomas MacMillan or Keith MacMillan (cru.org).

Valarie L. Scott-Garmire, resident of Coloma for 35 years, was born Feb. 26, 1952, and passed away April 21, 2013.

She was here
For a while.
We loved her
For her uniqueness
For, indeed she was one;
She was her own —
She was an artist,
A weaver, a crafter,
A gourmet cook, a photographer.
She created beauty
All around her.
She was a gifted caregiver,
Beloved by her co-workers
And those she cared for.
Her life was full.
Ours is the loss.
Valarie, walk in beauty.

For those who knew her and loved her, there will be an intimate remembrance at her residence in Coloma on Friday, May 3, at 5 p.m.
