The oldest hardware store west of the Mississippi River has been around for 160 years because it provides the local community with the products and services it needs decade after decade. Placerville Hardware, established in 1852, offers everything you would expect a hardware store to have plus an array of unique gifts and housewares. Highway 50 was built where the store’s dynamite storage cave was located. It’s a beacon of history, but still today remains the area’s favorite hardware store, according to readers. From tools for gold panning to tools to fix your plumbing, the store has it all. Only closed three days a year on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, Placerville Hardware is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
