Jupiter Goes Retrograde

Jovial Jupiter, the planet of abundance, good fortune and largesse, does an about-face to inspire us toward introspection. Mercury is still retrograde, too, though much crankier about it than Jupiter will be. Jupiter’s optimism makes him immune to the ill effects of a retrograde. In Cancer, Jupiter will have us thinking deeply about maternal ties.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). To some people, all of that thinking that you do looks like you just sitting quietly. But make no mistake, thinking is labor. Today it will be taxing labor, too, but by the day’s end, you’ll have sorted out a big problem.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Accomplishments will happen because of one person’s will. An entire company of people wouldn’t be able to do what you alone do today and with great intention and focus.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You may feel like your performance is being scrutinized. Celebrate the awesome and the awful of it. If you were perfect on the first try, the fun of learning, growing and improving would be lost.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). Doctors don’t heal wounds; rather, they do what they can to support the body’s natural healing abilities. Non-physical wounds work in the same way. In a supportive environment, they gradually mend.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You’re afraid that if you forgive someone, he or she will keep perpetuating the wrong behavior. You may be right about this. To avoid a codependent relationship, you’ll have to spell out the boundaries.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Mastery is about apportioning your attention intelligently. You will give prolonged focus to a practice every day so that later you can execute the task with minimal effort.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Having the same opinion as a large number of other people doesn’t make your opinion right or wrong. It only reduces the chances that you’ll be persecuted for it.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You can learn about what it means to be courageous through stories of courageous acts. But you can only learn about your own courage by finding it inside yourself and using it when the moment arises.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). The day is mostly filled with positives, but it’s peppered with a few frustrations. Just when you start to think your life is hard, someone with a truly difficult circumstance helps you get perspective.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Originality will count in a big way. Don’t blend in; fit in instead. Be like a puzzle piece, providing the parts that are lacking or lacking the parts that are provided.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Until you find someone to listen to you or some other way to unload your thoughts, your mind may feel a bit like a drawer crammed with strange accumulated items from your past.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You’ll get more than your fair share of feedback, and most of it good. But you won’t learn much from positive comments, so keep digging and asking what you could do better.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Nov. 7). You really don’t give yourself enough credit, but your humility will serve you well this year, as it enables you to learn from everyone you meet. New business in December lines your pockets. Your family grows in January. Someone falls in love with your depth in February. Pick up a skill in March. You’ll travel in style in June. Gemini and Libra people adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 8, 39, 33, 31 and 47.

JUPITER RETROGRADE: Jupiter has 67 confirmed moons, some of them bigger than Pluto. Is it any wonder that astrologers associate this planet with excess, largesse, abundance and any number of other words that roughly translate to: “a whole lot of big.” When Jupiter makes a change, it alters our sense of scale.

Of course, big and small are relative, and Jupiter retrograde will help us play a game of contrasts to bring the point home. Currently, Jupiter is traveling through Cancer, the realm associated with mothers and maternal instinct. Now that the jolly cosmic giant is making a U-turn in this part of the sky, we may feel inspired to consider the maternal influence in our lives from a different angle. If your history or relationship with your own mother is a hot topic emotionally, you might be surprised by your own shifting thoughts on the matter. What you thought was a big contribution, a big deal or a big problem may suddenly seem minor against other considerations.

Cancer is also the realm of home and domesticity. While he’s traveling backward and more internally focused, Jupiter encourages us to create a sense of “home” inside ourselves. Do this, and you’ll feel comfortable wherever you go.

CELEBRITY PROFILES: French house music DJ David Guetta blazed the trail for a new wave of DJ producers at the top of the pop charts, and the hits keep coming. Guetta’s natal sun, Mercury and Neptune in Scorpio signifies a developed intuitive sense, not to mention a high tolerance for the nightlife. His moon and Mars in the executive sign of Capricorn points to stellar business sense and is an indicator of significant wealth.
