No. 2: CIF wrestling championships
The next Top 10 story also took place at Rabobank Arena where Oak Ridge's Vince Waldhauser placed second at the CIF State Wrestling Championships and Union Mine's Cody Tow medaled for a third year.
On wrestling's biggest stage, Waldhauser tore through opponents over two days of rugged competition and had yet to yield a point in Bakersfield or in the previous three weeks of qualifying tournaments.
In the finals, Waldhauser faced the state's No. 1-ranked wrestler and hometown favorite Bryce Hammond of Bakersfield High. After placing seventh last year, Waldhauser's dream of a state title was dashed 30 seconds in when his ankle popped.
Though Waldhauser courageously fought on despite the injury in a manner Oak Ridge coach Casey Rhyan characterized as "wrestling without your legs," Hammond prevailed 6-0 to win the 160-pound division.
Waldhauser is the second Trojan wrestler in three years to take home silver; Kyle West was a runner-up in 2008. He lost just twice all season and steamrolled through the playoffs, winning the Sierra Valley Conference title and the Division II and Sac-Joaquin Section Masters championships without surrendering a single point.
Waldhauser dominated all comers at Rabobank, pinning his first three opponents with his goal of winning a state title in sight. In his final match of the first day of wrestling, Waldhauser pinned Lemoore's Jacob Pendleton just 48 seconds into the first period.
In the semifinals Waldhauser controlled Selma's Justin Lozano 3-0 to reach the main stage where Hammond waited.
Tow added to his resumé when he medaled at Rabobank for the third straight year after taking sixth in the 125-pound weight class. Now a senior, Tow has a unique opportunity to join an exclusive club of prep grapplers who medaled all four years.
The three-time Sierra Valley Conference and Division II champion and two-time Sac-Joaquin Section Masters champion made it through the first day undefeated at Rabobank but dropped his first match the next morning.
Assured a medal and hoping for third place, Tow dropped a 12-6 decision and wrestled for fifth where he narrowly lost 2-1 to Chris Mecate of Redlands East Valley.
"Cody's had a great year. He came into this tournament ranked sixth in a bracket with seven returning medalists and now he's on track to become Union Mine's first four-time medalist. There aren't many kids that can do that," Diamondback coach Tim Brown said.
