SACRAMENTO — High school swimmers have two goals through the season — help their teams win their respective league championships and qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section meet. Unlike most sports, winning a team title does not qualify the entire team for the section meet; instead, swimmers must meet or surpass section standard times through the regular season. The more swimmers who qualify, the better a team’s chances for winning the section championship.

The Delta River League championships April 29-30 at Jesuit High was the last chance for swimmers to qualify for the section meet next week at Tokay High School in Lodi.

There are eight individual events and three relays in each meet. Swimmers are entered in two individual races and one relay, or three relays and one individual event. Only the ‘A’ relay team is able to score points. The top 16 swimmers in trials score points for their team and return for finals the second day to score more points for the team.

The St. Francis girls’ varsity team won the Delta River League title with 651.50 points, followed by Oak Ridge with 445.50, Ponderosa with 340, Pleasant Grove, Folsom and Sheldon. On the boys side, Jesuit won the championship with 598 points. Oak Ridge was second with 509, followed by Ponderosa in third with 265, Pleasant Grove, Sheldon and Folsom.

”All of the kids performed better than we could have hoped,” Oak Ridge coach Patrick Foster said. “We are very pleased with everyone’s efforts. It was an exciting championship. This was our first year in the Delta River Leauge and we thought it was a very successful season.”

Foster cited Trojan Brandon Mills for a successful meet with two individual wins in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. Mills, Trevor Dong, Dylan Kubick and Garrison Yeandle teamed up to win the 200 medley relay with a new league record of 1 minute, 9.32 seconds. Yeandle took first in the 50 freestyle.

“There were so many personal best swims,” Foster said. “But one swimmer in particular, Annie Harriman, had the meet of her life. Annie broke her ankle in two places at the beginning of the season and was out of the pool until about four weeks ago. With her ankle taped up and her whole team behind her, Annie qualified for sections in two events and finished seventh in the 100 back.”

Ponderosa’s Taylor Lehr won two championships, breaking the league record in the 200 free in 1:56.20 and following up with a victory in the 500 free. Lehr and teammates Katie Weiss, Gina Troquato and Sammie Woo set a school record and took second in the 200 medley relay (1:53.59).

“Our swimmers had many races where they out-touched competitors at the end, which as a coach, is always something you want to see,” Ponderosa coach Aimee Lehr said.

Andy Cunningham led the Bruin boys with the league title in the 100 back (53.82) and a second in another event.

“We had many swimmers return for the finals,” coach Lehr added. “This was the largest percentage of best times I remember since I started coaching at Ponderosa.”

The girls’ section trials are Thursday, May 12; the boys’ trials are Friday, May 13, and the top 16 in each event return for the finals Saturday, May 14. All divisions compete against each other.
