Swimsuit season: Every year people must decide to embrace it or hide under the towel.

Don’t panic. Get beach body ready at Powerhouse Gym in Placerville.

The fitness center has everything one needs to get into shape — a large cardio room, free weights, machines targeting specific muscle groups and a non-intimidating atmosphere that invites everyone to come and work out.

“It’s never uncomfortable no matter your fitness level,” said manager Candace Ramme. “It’s a friendly environment where you feel welcome as soon as you walk in the door.”

Ramme credits her staff with creating the gym’s relaxing atmosphere. She called her front counter staff “friendly and outgoing,” always ready to help and answer questions. “And our personal trainers are just amazing,” she added.

Powerhouse Gym’s personal trainers Glenda Fowler, Stacy Alway and Scott Louis know how to motivate their clients.

Fowler recently competed in her second professional bodybuilding competition. She’s an inspirational trainer, Ramme noted; she lost more that 125 pounds on her own. “She knows exactly what they’re going through and how to motivate them,” Ramme said.

Alway has competed in many bodybuilding competitions over the years and will attend this year’s national event in Las Vegas at the end of the month. Louis is Powerhouse’s newest personal trainer. He’s been a member for years, Ramme explained, and was inspired by other trainers to turn his workouts into a profession.

Powerhouse Gym also hosts classes, from yoga to zumba to kickboxing to cycling. Some classes are free to members; others require an additional fee.

Another Powerhouse Gym perk is the free weight room, according to Ramme, as well as the large selection of weight machines. “Usually no one has to wait for anything,” she said. And maintenance is very important; machines are kept in perfect working order (or parts are on the way) and they recently re-upholstered all the benches in the free weight room.

And no using that “I don’t have time” excuse. Powerhouse Gym is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gym also has childcare available on weekdays. “Thank goodness for that because I have three kids of my own and I would never be able to work out without it,” Ramme said.

Powerhouse Gym is located at 4615 Missouri Flat Road, Suite 11, Placerville. The gym is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Babysitting hours are 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
